Richard Harris is dead
This is indeed a sad day for Harry Potter fans worldwide. MSNBC:
Richard Harris, the renowned actor best known to millions of young Muggles as the wizened, kind-hearted Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, has died at a London hospital, a family spokesman said Friday. Harris was ill with cancer. He had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease and was undergoing chemotherapy.
The 72-year-old Irish actor was hospitalized in August after complaining of a severe chest infection. It was then that doctors discovered the Hodgkin’s, a cancer which attacks the body’s lymph nodes.
Harris’ condition was serious enough to warrant the filmmakers of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” to use a double to complete some of the actor’s final scenes.
Dumbledore himself once said:
"To the well organized mind, death is but the next great adventure."
May you find happiness on your next great adventure, Richard. You will be sorely missed as the Dumbledore we've grown to love. Our prayers go out to your friends and family.
Cast pays tribute to Harris
CBBC Newsround reports:
Potter director Chris Columbus had this to say:
"We're all still in an incredible amount of shock. We knew Richard was sick but he was such a fighter that somehow deep down we all expected him to make it and get through it and be in the third Harry Potter film.
"So it's a complete shock because we've all worked so closely together. It's like losing a member of your family."
The film's cast and crew made this statement:
"Richard Harris was a remarkable actor and a generous and free spirit. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time. He was a controversial character during his career and was known for his wild ways."
